Hi, I’m Louisa Stein (she/they), an Associate Professor of Film and Media Culture at Middlebury College. My courses include Remix Culture & Social Media; Theories of Spectatorship, Audience, and Fandom; Sherlock Holmes Across Media; Fan Video: Theory & Practice; & Aesthetics of The Moving Image.
My teaching and research focus on audience, fandom, audience authorship, transcultural experience, generational identity, and remix culture. I’ve written a book on Millennial Fandom and am an editor of the recent A Tumblr Book. In the past I’ve co-edited books on the BBC’s Sherlock and Teen Television. I also make video remixes, or edits, myself, and I’m especially interested in the way fan video traditions can be brought in conversation with the evolving field of videographic criticism. I am also a founding member of the Fan Studies Network-North America Conference.
Before coming to Middlebury, I headed the Critical Studies Area of the Television, Film, and New Media department at San Diego State University. I received my PhD from NYU’s Department of Cinema Studies in 2006.
